A GRANT of £410 from East Lindsey District Council has enabled a Mablethorpe
Guest House to achieve a three star rating for its accommodation from Visit
Britain, just three years after been taken over by new owners.
Sally and Darren Hastings relocated from the South East in 2005 to take
over the running of Myrtle Lodge guesthouse in Mablethorpe.
They left their jobs and sold properties in Hertfordshire, seeing the
guesthouse as the ideal opportunity to run their own business as well
as continue Sally’s career in hospitality. With initial guidance
from Darren’s father and after a successful season renting the guesthouse,
the couple bought the business and have since continued to build up a
large number of regular guests as well as attracting new visitors.
Having a star rating gives visitors reassurance that accommodation has
been independently assessed and has achieved a recognised level of quality.
Only businesses that have received a star rating can feature in many tourist
board guides and websites.
Darren said the Council’s support had proved invaluable: “The
process of getting a star rating is quick and straightforward and I would
encourage other guesthouse owners to apply because it really recognise
the good work going on to improve holiday accommodation along the coast.
“VisitBritain initially sent through an information pack, giving
us a clear understanding of the rating scheme and what to expect. They
then had an anonymous visit from an assessor who stayed overnight. After
checking out, the assessor introduced herself and spent some time with
Sally and Darren looking around the other rooms and talking through what
she had found. The assessor awarded a 3 star rating there and then.”
“The process of getting a star rating is often misunderstood with
some businesses expecting to see an ‘inspector’ with a clipboard
looking for reasons to fail you.”
“Some people get stressed about the assessment, but we knew we
were doing a good job. The assessors are human beings and are there to
help businesses to become part of the scheme. We like to strike up a relationship
and work with them.”
Sally sees the assessors as a source of valuable feedback and guidance.
“They visit hundreds of properties every year and know exactly what
today’s visitors are looking for. You can test out ideas and ask
for their suggestions.”
Sally and Darren took over Myrtle Lodge from Darren’s father in
2005. Sally and Darren are looking forward to a busy year ahead. After
maintenance work and extensive re-decorating over the winter period, the
guesthouse re-opens at Easter for the 2008 season. Sally and Darren pride
themselves on providing a quality and friendly experience. “We want
guests to feel welcome and relaxed. We offer comfortable, good quality
rooms, a friendly atmosphere and we will do all we can to make sure our
guests have the very best experience during their stay in Lincolnshire.”
Myrtle Lodge is open from Easter to end of September and over the Christmas
period. Rates range from £22-£25 per person, per night, with
discounts for families and weekly stays.
